The Breacher

When seventeen-year-old Nathan Hardline causes his adoptive brother’s Discard-dooming injury, he swears to save him from the Colony’s population control system. Standing for centuries, no one knows how the Colony came to be or what lies beyond its enormous walls. But in its system, survival is all that matters. Everyone must work to earn a score. Those with the highest scores live in luxury – those with the lowest are publicly executed in monthly Discards. Nathan’s promise soon throws him into the secretive Breaching of the Walls Department where he’ll have to survive beyond the walls of the Colony itself in order to save his brother. While struggling to stay alive, Nathan quickly comes to realize that he must weigh finding the truth about the department’s purpose against his own safety. But the answers will soon find him, putting him face-to-face with the horrible truth about the Colony’s future and his own past.

Nathan is alive. He doesn’t know how, and he doesn’t know why, but he needs answers. Answers are hard to come by in the ancient labyrinth of stone corridors beneath the mountain. All he can find are references to Trials and something called The Beast. But Nathan knows one thing for sure: he isn’t alone. The mysterious mountain is the least of Nathan’s concerns, however. The Northborns are back in the Colony, and each day brings them closer to an execution at the hands of the Council. But saving his family won’t be so simple this time. The Colony has taken a turn he never expected – a shift which will force him to decide between his family, his friends, and his ideals.

As the war marches closer to a bloody end, Nathan and Dakota venture into the depths of the Reaches to face the Trials. But beneath the weight of the tests, the team is beginning to shatter. Both in the Colony and beyond, no friendship – no family – can survive forever. Everything rides on the Failsafe, on Nathan. In the sleepless nights, he can’t help but wonder if he has the strength to finish this journey. Maybe the price has already been too high. But something deeper, darker is hunting Nathan. He sees it every time he closes his eyes – a storm crawling over the horizon. With it comes a voice on the wind, a question. It’s one Nathan has been running from his entire life. If he wants to save the world, running isn’t something he can do anymore. If he wants to save the world, he'll need to find the answer:

Is the world worth saving?

The Breacher

Only a few years ago when I was about fifteen years old, I knew I wanted to become an author. I was fiddling around with a few concepts for my first novel when I suddenly started considering population control and what interesting forms it could realistically take. The Colony's System was developed one day, outlining how people would work for Purpose Scores, and Discards would eliminate those who worked with the least efficiency. I quite liked the idea, so I began thinking of suitable settings where I could implement the System. Before long, the Colony, the Council, Nathan, and the Northborns came to be. The plot took a little longer to develop. Once the idea for the Breaching of the Walls Department hit me, though, I ran with it. I started writing the first draft when I turned sixteen and haven't stopped working on it since!
